What’s Really Going On?

Hormones are tiny messengers zooming around in your bloodstream, orchestrating everything from fertility and bone density to mood and emotional health. While menopause and puberty are definitely star players in the hormone drama, both men and women can face daily ups and downs that feel more like a roller coaster than a routine.

When your hormones slip out of balance, it’s like a rowdy party in your body—one that can stress out your blood sugar levels, metabolism, sleep cycle, bone density, organ function, fertility, mood, fluid regulation, electrolyte balance, immune system, sex drive, blood pressure, and emotional health (whew!). If it becomes a common occurrence, these hormonal imbalances can lead to some pretty serious diseases.

Our modern world has practically become a hormone hazard zone, but there’s good news: you can still steer your well-being in the right direction with some steady, sensible lifestyle choices. At Alywillow, one of our guiding missions is to bring clarity and simplicity to natural living. We’ve done the homework so you don’t have to—explaining what’s happening in your body and why, and sharing straightforward, practical tips to help restore balance.

Ready to figure out which troublemakers might be knocking your hormones off-kilter, and more importantly, how to avoid them? Let’s dive in and get you back to feeling like yourself—only better!

Is Our Environment Messing with Our Hormones?

Short answer: Absolutely! In fact, it’s estimated that 90% of grocery store products and nearly 99% of body care products contain synthetic chemicals or harmful ingredients—including hormone disruptors. When you add in the off-gassing from plastics, perfumes, and petrochemicals, and it’s no wonder we sometimes feel like we’re in a constant spin cycle! There are countless hormone disruptors out there, but let’s pick on one big troublemaker: synthetic emulsifiers. These sneaky chemicals blend the ingredients in perfumes, lotions, detergents, and even many foods.... and they’re known to throw hormones off track.

Are we “hormonally modified”?

Unfortunately, yes. The pathogens and pollutants in our food, products, and environment affect all of us... We are all hormonally modified, and not in a good way. We're a nation out of balance and everywhere you turn, there are more pollutants causing disfunction. Even in most of the so-called natural products.

When I first realized how many synthetics lurked in natural and handmade products, I spent countless hours reading labels (and scratching my head!). Surely this can't be right. But it was! That was back in the early 1990's and unfortunately, it hasn't gotten any better.

On top of that, misleading marketing ads makes things worse! They can add ONE drop of something good for you into a bottle of synthetics and then blast it in all their marketing as if it's something new and great. When in reality, they are too concerned about their profits to keep the product really clean of junk. And of course who can forget the wild claims like “yam cream fixes everything” or “just soak your feet in onion juice!” (Btw, that will probably only leave you with onion-toes…)

If you've tried to live a natural life, it probably feels overwhelming (and maybe you're tired of having onion toes...).

Thankfully, there is good news! Because, balanced hormones mean clearer skin, improved mood, healthier organs, stronger bones—and a big boost of overall well-being.

With just a handful of small lifestyle tweaks, you’ll be cheering on your hormones instead of dragging them through the mud. In turn, your body can chill out, stress less, and naturally hit its happy stride—like a well-tuned machine that’s ready for the next adventure!

3 Steps for Optimal Hormone Performance

Prioritize Fresh, Real Foods.

  1. Eat Clean: Avoid ultra processed foods and instead choose fresh or frozen veggies (not canned), dried beans (not canned), a variety of grains (not from a box and not instant), and clean sources of protein (no sulfates, no to low processing, and no canned meats).
  2. Cook with safe oils. Use low heat for cooking mono saturated oils such as avocado or saturated oils like coconut oil or real butter, while saving the olive oil for drizzling and dipping.
  3. Pro Tip: Instead of waiting for in line for takeout or for a server to come to your table. Reserve an hour or two each week to prep big batches of beans, lentils, roasted veggies, and rice. Store them in the fridge in marked containers, and voilà! Quick, fresh meals in minutes. You only need to saute some protein or chop up a fresh salad and you've got fast meals all week.

Careful About What You Breathe.

  1. Every breath brings molecules into your body that enter your lungs and then your bloodstream. This is one of the reasons scientiest have found forever chemicals in our body! So, avoid pesticide aisles, synthetic fragrances, and toxic fumes (yes, that includes gas-station whiffs!).
  2. Ditch the synthetic fragrances... Chemical air fresheners and fabric softeners are literally poisoning your body. Choose greener, healthier options. (We make spritzers, perfumes, or essential oils - of pure plants!)
  3. Make your own cleaners. At home, we make our own laundry detergent and general cleansers. They’re fast and easy to make. very effective, and ultra simple - keeping us and our home toxin-free. Here are the recipes. Enjoy!

Protect Your Skin.

  1. It's the largest organ of your body. The health of your skin says about the health of your body and contrary to popular belief, your skin is delicate—and it absorbs a lot. Massaging it daily with a nutrient rich moisturizer will make it stronger.
  2. Maintain healthy cells: Steer clear of sugar scrubs or anything else that disturbs your pH balance. Don’t over-exfoliate (as it damages your skin) and enjoy a bit of sunshine, but not too much. Winter sunlight is very good for you, but in the Summer it is the three hours after sunrise & three hours before sunset that are best!
  3. Beware of Synthetics: Many conventional products use synthetic chemicals that disrupt your hormones, avoid them. And, if you don't have to shake a bottle of liquid, well, you know it has emulsifiers.
