A growing concern
A new kind of allergy is changing everyday choices.
Alpha-gal syndrome is linked most often in the United States to the bite of the lone star tick. Unlike a typical immediate food allergy, reactions may be delayed after exposure to alpha-gal, a sugar found in most non-primate mammals and in some mammal-derived ingredients.
The available data shows a clear rise in suspected cases and growing geographic reach. The CDC documented annual increases in positive Alpha-gal tests during 2017–2021, while current tick surveillance shows the lone star tick established across much of the South, Midwest, and Mid-Atlantic—including Virginia.

What about beeswax and honey?
A small number of Alywillow products contain organic beeswax or honey. Bees are not mammals, so these bee-derived ingredients are distinct from the mammalian-derived ingredients associated with Alpha-gal syndrome. Individual allergies can still differ.
Do Alywillow products contain mammalian-derived ingredients?
No. We do not formulate with mammalian-derived ingredients such as animal fats, lanolin, dairy, or gelatin.
Does “vegan” mean allergy-free?
